MAIZE — The Newton High School boys’ basketball team fell to Maize 85-73 Friday in Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I play in Maize.

Tied 20-20 after the first quarter, Maize took a 39-38 lead at the half. The Eagles extended its lead to 60-55 after three quarters and was able to hold off the Railers in the fourth.

Newton was called for 23 fouls to 17 against Maize. The Eagles were 20 of 23 from the line, while Newton was 12 of 17.

Maize was led by Jacob Hanna with 22 points, Kyle Grill with 16, Winston Bing with 12 and Jaden Gustafson with 11.

Newton was led by Alex Krogmeier with 15 points, followed by Kolyn Sauceda with 13, Jaheem Ray with 12, Jaxon Brackeen with 11 and Owen Mills with 11.

Maize is 6-7, 3-4 in AV-CTL I play. Newton drops to 5-8, 1-5 in league play.

Newton plays at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Salina Central. The Mustangs are 5-7, 1-4 in league play, stopping Hays 54-33.
