Jayden Vossen scored two goals with two assists, while Leyton Harper added two goals to lift unbeaten Andover Central to a 4-0 win over the Newton Railer boys’ soccer team Thursday in non-league play at Fischer Field.

Central improves to 14-0, while Newton falls to 4-9-1. Central is tied with Goddard Eisenhower for the top seed in the Class 5A west regional with two games to go.

Newton is tied with Salina Central for 12th in the 18-team regional. The top four teams host a regional.

“That was one of the top teams over there,” Newton coach Scott Jantzi said. “They are undefeated. They have eight seniors. Size-wise, speed-wise, strength-wise, they were tough. We did a good job hanging with them. We had a couple of breakdowns they were able to take advantage of. I can’t fault the effort. The guys were giving it their all.”

Newton honored its three seniors before the game — Xander Valdivia, Luis Alvarez and John Jantzen.

Central dominated play in the first half, taking the lead in the seventh minute on a Vossen breakaway off a steal. Newton had several scoring chances in the first half, but showed an inability to pull the trigger on shots.

Central added goals by Harper on a Vossen corner kick in the 25th minute and another Vossen breakaway in the 38th minute.

Central also picked up three cautions in the first half, two for tripping.

Central held an 8-1 advantage in shots in the first half.

Newton was able to disrupt Central’s attack a little better in the second half, generating several scoring chances for themselves.

Harper scored on a breakaway in the 51st minute. Newton was outshot 10-5 in the period.

Blake Robison had four saves in goal for Central for the clean sheet. Selvin Abrego had 10 saves for the Railers.

Newton plays at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Salina Central.

“We have two games left,” Jantzi said. “Salina Central is a winnable game. We have to go up there and play some good soccer. Then we have Maize South on Thursday. They have one loss. We’re looking forward.”

JUNIOR VARSITY — The Newton junior varsity fell to Andover Central 1-0. Newton is 8-3-2 and plays Thursday at Salina Central.
