in league play

DERBY — The Newton High School volleyball team dropped a pair of matches Tuesday in Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I play in Derby.

Newton fell to Derby 25-16, 22-25, 25-15; and Maize 14-25, 25-18, 25-22.

“Tonight did not turn out how we wanted it to,” Newton coach Jamie Dibbens said. “We had too many unforced errors and that made it so we couldn't gain a lot of momentum when we needed too. I'm proud of our team for not giving up. Are biggest challenge now is that we have to beat good teams on their court. We won't have another home game this season so finding a way to push points on the road will be important.”

Against Derby, Asha Regier had 16 kills while Gracie Rains had nine. Marah Zenner set 24 assists. Regier had 19 digs, followed by Olivia Antonowich with 13 and Zenner with 10.

Against Maize, Regier had 21 kills. Zenner set 25 assists. Rains had 12 digs.

Newton splits the league matches against both Maize and Derby.

Derby improves to 23-6, 9-1 in league play. Maize is 11-20, 6-5 in league play. Newton is 15-12, 7-2 in league play.

Newton competes at 9 a.m, Saturday at the Derby Invitational.

Hesston sweeps

league tri

LARNED — The Hesston High School volleyball team swept a Central Kansas League triangular Tuesday at Larned.

Hesston topped host Larned 25-15, 25-9; and Nickerson 25-16, 25-21. Nickerson downed Larned 14-25, 25-9, 27-25.

“We played with better energy and intensity tonight than we have in recent matches,” Hesston coach Jason Peters said. “We had a good night serving and had a strong hitting percentage. Against Nickerson, we jumped out to a 13-2 lead in the first set due to several aces and strong kills, along with some Nickerson errors. We were able to extend the lead to 21-5 before Nickerson made a run at the end of the set. The second set was closer, but we took an early 5-0 lead and then went back and forth with them for most of the set. Nickerson got within one point a few times late, but we did a nice job keeping our composure and staying positive when they would make a run. Hopefully these matches send us in the right direction as we will continue to face tough competition the next two weeks.”

Hesston is 16-7, 7-0 in CKL play. Hesston plays Thursday at Hoisington with Southeast of Salina and Beloit. Hesston then plays Saturday at the Council Grove Invitational.

JV — Hesston def. Nickerson 25-21, 25-22; Hesston def. Larned 25-5, 25-6.

C team — Hesston 5 def. Larned 25-5, 25-6; Hesston 4 def. Nickerson 25-13, 25-19.
