Looking to fund an upcoming trip to Disney World in 2020, Newton High School choir director Amy Ives had the bright idea of trying out a new fundraiser — a Glow Ride — to help send the students on their way. The NHS choir is inviting children and family members of all ages to participate in the festivities that will be held Sept. 13 at the high school. Here are a few of the highlights:

1. Fuel up

Part of the fundraiser for NHS choir students (who need to raise $1,200 each for the trip) will include a concession stand set up at the NHS parking lot closest to the tennis courts. Students will help run the concession stand, which will be selling nachos, popcorn, chili and Frito pies starting at 6 p.m.

2. Ride out

Additionally, glow-in-the-dark necklaces and bracelets will be sold for bike decorations on the ride, which will start at sunset and go from the high school to Athletic Park and back (though families with younger children can take a shorter route if preferred).

There will also be a bike rodeo held for younger riders in the NHS parking lot, facilitated by the choir students, while the group will also be receiving assistance from the Newton Police Department for both the rodeo and Glow Ride.

3. Support NHS students

Having been chosen to perform at Disney World is a big deal, something Ives noted can be a life-changing experience for her students. A total of 24 students will be going on the trip over spring break, and Ives said they already have been stepping up to prepare themselves for a challenging task.

While there are some other fundraisers in the works, Ives noted that any money collected will help ease the burden on students and be a "blessing" from the community, as well as helping achieve one of the main goals of the event.

"My ultimate goal is to give my students the best opportunities," Ives said. "My other goal is to show my students how much our community wants to support them and providing our community a fun, family-friendly event."
