HAYS — As summer enters its last days later this month, vintage baseball will return to Historic Fort Hays with four teams scheduled to play.
There is no admission charge for the public to watch the games, which start at 10 a.m. Sept. 21 at the historic site, 1472 US-183 highway alternate. Food will be available on site.
Two other Kansas teams — the Cowtown Vintage Base Ball Club, Wichita, and the Emporia Vintage Base Ball Club, along with the Colorado Vintage Base Ball Association, Denver, will face off with the Historic Fort Hays team, Post Nine.
The games are played according to the rules of 1867 and using uniforms and equipment of the times, which did not include the gloves players and fans are familiar with today.
The Society of Friends of Fort Hays, which supports activities at the historic site, purchased the uniforms for the Hays team.
The schedule on Sept. 21 is as follows:
• 10 a.m., Cowtown Vintage Base Ball Club vs. Colorado Vintage Base Ball Association.
• 11:30 a.m., Post Nine (Historic Fort Hays Team) vs. Emporia Vintage Base Ball Club.
• 1 p.m., Post Nine vs. Cowtown.
• 2:30 p.m., Colorado vs. Emporia.
