One killed, four injured in Finney County collision
FINNEY COUNTY — One man died, and four other people were injured, two critically, when a car was traveling the wrong way on a highway in Finney County on Saturday afternoon.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, a 2000 GMC Sierra truck driven by Mariano Rodriguez, 22, of Wichita Falls, Texas, was heading eastbound on US-50 highway in the westbound lanes when he collided with a westbound vehicle.
The driver of the westbound 2006 Pontiac G6, Saine Taw, 37, of Garden City, made an avoidance maneuver, but lost control and the vehicle was struck on the passenger side.
The passenger in that vehicle, Par Lay, 47, of Garden City, was killed.
The crash occurred a mile west of Chmelka Road, or about four miles northwest of Garden City, about 11:30 a.m.
Taw and a 13-year-old passenger in the truck, Ricardo Alvardo, of Wichita Falls, Texas, were both taken to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. Both were listed in critical condition Monday morning.
Rodriguez and another passenger in his vehicle, Luz Huerta Perez, 21, of Wichita Falls, were taken to St. Catherine’s Hospital in Garden City, the driver with serious injuries and the passenger with minor injuries.
All five people in the crash were wearing seat belts, the report stated.
