MULVANE — After an embarrassing 11-1 home loss to the Mulvane Patriots Tuesday, the Newton Rebels kept their hopes alive for a Sunflower Collegiate League post season berth, stopping the Patriots 8-1 Wednesday night in Mulvane.

Coupled with a 15-9 win for the Derby Twins over the El Dorado Broncos, the Rebels have a one-game lead over both El Dorado and Mulvane with one game remaining for all three teams.

Mulvane scored a run in the bottom of the first inning on a Jack Maki sacrifice fly, but that was all the scoring the Patriots were able to muster.

Steven Dennis threw seven innings for the Rebels, allowing a run on two hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Daniel Rubio finished the game, allowing three hits and a strikeout.

Newton tied the game in the top of the third when Garrett McClain came home on an error. Newton took the lead with three runs in the fifth inning that included an Enzo Bonventre home run.

Bonventre and Drew Healy added solo shots in the eighth inning. Newton added two more runs in the ninth inning on Patriot errors.

McClain finished two for four hitting. Bonventre and Luke Royle each went two for five. Royle drove in a run.

Willie Ward went two for four hitting for the Patriots.

Drake Norton pitched seven innings for the loss for Mulvane, striking out three. Colby Pechin struck out a batter in the eighth. Dakota Rodd struck out two batters in the ninth.

The Patriots finished the game with eight errors.

Mulvane falls to 16-20, 15-18 in league play. El Dorado also drops to 15-18 in league play.

Newton is 21-18-1, 16-17 in league play, and hosts the Wichita Sluggers at 7 p.m. Thursday at Klein-Scott Field to close out regular-season play.
