In a key game for post-season hopes, the bats for the Newton Rebels went silent in an 11-1 loss to the Mulvane Patriots Tuesday night in Sunflower Collegiate League play at Klein-Scott Field.

Mulvane scored six runs in the seventh inning to pull away. The game was called after eight innings on the 10-run rule.

The loss sets Newton back to 20-18-1, 15-17 in league play. Mulvane is 16-19, 15-17 in league play. El Dorado fell to Derby 3-1, and are tied for third in the SCL East with Newton and Mulvane. The top three teams in the division advance to the SCL playoffs.

Newton holds the head-to-head tie-breaker against El Dorado. Mulvane holds the head-to-head tie-breaker over Newton. El Dorado holds the head-to-head tie-breaker over Mulvane.

The days’ results allowed Derby to clinch second place in the division at 18-13. Haysville clinched the division title at 21-12.

Newton manager Brett Clark declined comment after the game.

Zack Smith (1-4) pitched a complete game for Mulvane, allowing a run on three hits with four walks and three strikeouts.

Garrett McClain (0-3) took the loss in 6.2 innings, allowing three earned runs on five hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Zach Gillig and newcomer Brad McBride finished the game with one strikeout each.

Mulvane scored on the first two batters of the game. Keone Givens doubled and came home on a Willie Ward single.

With bases loaded and no outs in the bottom of the second inning, Mulvane turned a 5-2-3 double play. A pop out ended the threat.

Tanner Schuetz hit a two-run single with one out in the top of the seventh. Schuetz went to second on an error, third on a wild pitch and scored on a ground out. Givens put things away with a three-run home run.

Mulvane loaded the bases with one out in the top of the eighth. Kemper Bednar followed with a triple. Parker Base followed with a single to score Bednar.

Newton put the first two runners on base with no outs in the bottom of the eighth. A bunt and ground out scored a run. A pop fly ended the game.

Givens finished the game two for five with three RBIs. Cade Gonzales had two of Newton’s three hits.

MONDAY’S GAME — The Newton Rebels tied the Wellington Heat 7-7 in 10 innings in non-league play at Wellington. The game was a make-up of an earlier rainout. Game stats were not reported.

Newton plays Wednesday at Mulvane and Thursday at Klein-Scott Field against the Wichita Sluggers.
