For the second year, the Halstead Police Department will be welcoming families to Spring Lake Resort, 1308 S. Spring Lake Road in Halstead, from 7:30 a.m. to noon July 20 for a children's fishing derby. There will be plenty to keep kids busy, including these highlights.
1) A competition for all
Children ages 3 to 15 are welcome to compete in the free fishing derby, featuring five different divisions (3-4, 5-6, 7-9, 10-12 and 13-15) and prizes awarded for biggest fish, smallest fish (both by length) and most fish caught. One grand prize winner will also receive four gate admissions to Safari Joe's H2O Water Park in Tulsa, Okla.
The derby will be held from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Registration will be open from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. Those who attend are asked to bring their own fishing poles and lawn chairs. Bait, hooks, weights and bobbers will be provided, and a limited amount of "loaner" poles will be available.
2) Meet the boys in blue
While Officer Shawn Robinson pushed for the Halstead Police Department to host a fishing derby in an effort to restart a tradition he remembered from his childhood last year, there was an added benefit he saw and wanted to highlight — the opportunity to spend time with younger members of the community, while in uniform, in a relaxed environment. Giving kids the opportunity to see officers are people, too, is an important aspect in the eyes of Robinson.
3) Working up an appetite
After the fishing derby, prizes will be awarded and a free lunch will be served to all attendees starting at 11:30 a.m.
