Thunder signs

three players

WICHITA — The Wichita Thunder hockey team announced its first three player signings for the 2019-20 season.

The Thunder inked forwards Fabrizio Ricci, John Carpino and Matthew Whittaker.

"I'm very excited to have these three young, hungry forwards as part of the Thunder family," Thunder coach Bruce Ramsay said. "They all bring size, grit and determination to our lineup and I'm looking forward to helping them achieve their goal of playing at a higher level."

Ricci is a second-year pro, who spent two seasons in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, where he scored 32 goals with 42 assists in 133 games. He added an assist in six playoff games.

He spent the 2016-17 season with Ryerson University in Canada, where he scored five goals with five assists in 16 games.

He spent last season with the Dundee Stars of the British Elite Ice Hockey League, scoring 17 goals with 22 assists in 60 games.

Carpino is a rookie who played two seasons at Western Michigan, where he scored a goal with an assist in 11 games. He then played three seasons at Ryerson, where he scored 30 goals with 30 assists in 82 games.

Whittaker is a rookie who spent the last four years at Mercyhurst College, an NCAA Division I team in Erie, Pa., where he scored 25 goals with 33 assists in 106 games.

At the end of last season, Whittaker played five games with Newfoundland of the ECHL on an amateur tryout.

THUNDER MAKES OFFERS — The Thunder made eight qualifying offers to players on its protected list, the maximum allowed under ECHL rules.

A player who does not sign an offer sheet or contract by Aug. 1 is deemed an unrestricted free agent.

Players extended offers include:

Forwards: Ralph Cuddemi, Stefan Fournier, Hayden Hodgson, Mark MacMillan, Quentin Shore and Dyson Stevenson.

Defensemen: Nolan De Jong and Tyler Elbrecht.

Bethany named

athletic dean

LINDSBORG — Bethany College named Laura Moreno as its Dean of Athletics.

Moreno served as interim athletic director since March. She also served as the head softball coach, but has stepped down in that role.

Moreno is a 2009 Bethany alumn with a degree in sports management. She spent two seasons as the assistant softball coach before becoming the head coach at now-defunct Brown Mackie College in Salina.

She returned to Bethany to serve as an assistant softball coach, athletics administrative assistant and assistant sports information director. She later became head softball coach and was named assistant athletic director in 2017.
