The Newton American Legion Post 2 Senior Knights fell a little flat in the team’s first game against the Hutchinson Seniors Tuesday night at Klein-Scott Field, but regained its balance in the second game.

The Knights dropped the first game 6-4, but won the second game 10-0 in five innings on the 10-run rule.

“We did a nice job of bouncing back,” Newton manager Evan Gilbert said. “We didn’t have any errors in the second game. It was a really solid performance.”

Camden Fenwick claimed the shutout win in the second game, allowing three hits, four walks and seven strikeouts. He finished the game one pitch away from the Legion pitch count of 105.

“He threw 42 pitches in the first two innings, but did a solid job of settling down,” Gilbert said. “He’s going to be gone for a little bit, so he knew he would be carrying the load in the second game a bit. He did a nice job of settling in. He commanded his fast ball. When you make plays with a guy like Cam on the bump, you can go for a little while.”

Ben Schmidt went two for three hitting. Henry Classen and Luke Boston both drove in two runs.

“We stayed in our approach a little better in the second game,” Gilbert said. “We had something like 18 quality at bats in the second game. We might have only had six hits, but we got guys on base and drove them in with a big hit.”

Tyler Radloff took the loss for Hutchinson.

Newton opened the scoring in the second game with four runs in the third inning. Claassen hit a two-run double. Schmidt drove in a run on a single. Newton scored a run on a run-down play.

Newton loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the fourth, scoring a run on a double play ball and on an error. The Knights ended the game with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Matt Seirer ended the game with an RBI single.

In the first game, Newton scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. Zach Kennel drove in a run. Newton also scored on a run-down play.

Hutchinson used four hits in the top of the third to score four runs. Carter Booe, Kahler Dixon, Ryan Cherry and Kaden Goldsmith each drove in a run. Hutchinson added two runs in the fifth inning on a Knight error.

Newton scored a run in the sixth and put two runners on base in the seventh inning with two outs. Claassen singled to drive in a run. A ground out ended the game.

Claassen and Schmidt each had two hits for Newton.

Bennett Turner pitched six innings for Hutchinson for the win, striking out three. Radloff finished the game for the save.

Griffin Davis took the loss for Newton, striking out three. Kennel finished the game.

Hutchinson is 11-10.

Newton is 6-18-1 and hosts Wichita East at 6 p.m. today for a single game. Newton plays Friday through Sunday at the Aviator Classic in Wichita. Newton faces Emporia, Chanute and Buhler in pool play.

“It will be a good test for us,” Gilbert said. “We have some guys going on vacation, so this will give some younger guys a chance to step up and get some playing time and see where they’re at. We’ve been playing a very tough schedule. It’s not about wins and losses, it’s are we getting better each day. I think we are.”
