BUHLER — The Newton Post 2 Senior Knights American Legion baseball team opened the season finishing 1-4-1 at the Hutchinson Showcase Tournament Friday through Sunday in Buhler.

In pool play, the Knights lost to the Buhler Nationals 11-0, tied the Wichita Aeros 7-7, lost to the 316 Elite-Jones 3-1 and lost to the Arsenal Stars 8-5.

In bracket play, the Knights downed the Wichita Aviators 14-1 and lost to the Arsenal Stars 7-1.

Against Buhler, Newton trailed 6-0 through six innings and gave up five runs in the top of the seventh.

Hunter Carson drove in three runs for Buhler. Korey Holmberg, Briggam McCurdy and Brandon Sides each had two hits.

Cole Lujano had the sole hit for Newton.

Austin Spann threw three innings of relief for the win. McCurdy threw one inning. Cole Ely threw two innings.

Griffin Davis took the loss for Newton, throwing four innings. Zach Kennell finished the game.

The Knights followed with a 7-7 tie against the Wichita Aeros.

Newton trailed 4-1 after the first inning, but scored three runs in the second. The Aeros scored a run in the bottom of the third, but Newton tied the game in the top of the fourth. Each team scored two runs in the sixth inning.

Matt Seirer went two for four for Newton with three RBIs. Ian Akers drove in two runs.

Javier Barboza drove in two runs for the Aeros. Ryan Knipfer went two for three with an RBI. Blake Holt went three for three with an RBI.

Trev Golubski pitched 2.1 innings for Newton with a strikeout. Matt Eldridge finished the game, striking out three.

Knipfer struck out seven for the Aeros in five innings. Barboza struck out one in the sixth inning.

Against the 316 Elite, Newton scored in the top of the first. The Elite tied the game and scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth for the win.

Newton High School pitcher Gavin Cusick pitched six innings for the Elite, striking out three. Cole Sphar pitched the seventh for the save.

Against the Arsenal Stars, Newton led 4-0 after the first inning, but was outscored 6-1 in the next three.

Halstead High pitcher Dawson Driskill pitched three innings for the Stars for the win, striking out six. Tyler Gates finished the game for the save. Ethan McMillan drove in three runs.

Seirer and Joel Franz each went two for three hitting for Newton with an RBI.

Against the Aviators, Newton led 4-1 after two innings, adding three runs in the sixth and seven runs in the seventh.

Newton stats were not posted.

In the quarterfinals against the Stars, Arsenal scored two runs in the second inning and five in the third. Newton was held to three hits.

Kennel had two hits for the Knights. Trey Degarmo drove in three runs for Arsenal.

Tanner Leslie pitched four innings for the win, striking out four. Kevin Murphy finished the game, allowing a hit.

The Senior Knights host McPherson at 5 p.m. Tuesday for their home opener.
