Newton High School girls’ basketball coach Justin Schneider resigned to become the boys’ basketball coach at Halstead High School.
Schneider came to Newton at the beginning of the 2018-19 school year to replace longtime coach Randy Jordan, who retired.
Schneider was 10-11 in his sole season with the Railers, 7-5 in Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I play. Newton fell to Bishop Carroll 50-39 in the Class 5A sub-state semifinals.
At Halstead, Schneider will succeed Lonnie Lollar, who coached there for three seasons, including a Class 3A state championship title in 2018. Lollar was 47-21 at Halstead and 283-208 in his head coaching career.
Schneider will take over a team that finished 12-8 last season, 5-4 in Central Kansas League play.
A native of the Colorado Springs area, Schneider is a Bethel College graduate who was an assistant boys’ coach at Newton for five years.
He then spent a season with the Halstead boys, helping lead the Dragons to a state title.
According to Newton activities director Brian Becker, the search has begun for a new girls’ basketball coach.
