In somewhat of a continuation from its regular meeting earlier this week, the Newton Board of Education convened for a special meeting on Thursday — mainly to address business items regarding personnel.

The board unanimously (with members Matt Treaster and Toby Tyner not present) approved the most recent personnel report, while also voting 4-0 to approve the recommended contract extensions for building administrators — on which action was initially tabled at Monday's meeting — including Newton High School principal Lisa Moore, NHS assistant principal and athletic director Brian Becker, NHS assistant principal Greg Dietz, NHS assistant principal and CTE Coordinator Melinda Rangel, Chisholm Middle School principal Bobbie Jo Grieb, CMS assistant principal Everardo Flores, Santa Fe 5/6 Center principal Jennifer Smith, Santa Fe assistant principal Brandon Cheeks, Slate Creek principal Tenae Alfaro, South Breeze principal Jana Bohling, Walton Rural Life Center principal Jason Chalshtari, Sunset principal Debbie Watson and Cooper Early Education Center principal Sarah Livesay. Board member Angela Becker abstained from voting.

Commenting on the short notice for the special meeting (with an email notification going out about two hours before it took place) before adjournment, board member Jennifer Budde said that lack of exposure may have "cast a shadow" over it. Having heard some shocked reactions about the meeting coming seemingly out of nowhere, she urged diligence in getting the word out about such matters moving forward.
