HAYS — The season came to an end for the Newton High School baseball team with a 9-3 loss to Hays High School in the semifinals of the Class 5A regional semifinals in Hays.

Newton opened the game with a hit batter and a single. Henry Claassen followed with an RBI single. An error led to another run. Claassen stole three bases for the third run.

Hays came back with four runs in the bottom of the first inning, a run in the third and four more runs in the fourth.

Palmer Hutchison pitched a complete game for Hays, allowing three runs, four hits, two walks and eight strikeouts.

Dylan Dreiling hit a home run and drove in four runs for Hays. Trey Riggs went three for three with a home run and three RBIs. Dom Bainter drove in two runs.

Ben Schmidt pitched 3.1 innings in the loss, allowing seven earned runs on four hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Matt Eldridge went 2.2 innings, allowing a run on three hits with a walk.

Newton ends the season 2-17.

Hays lost in the finals to Great Bend 6-2 and ends the season 18-2.
