MAIZE — The Newton High School baseball team suffered through a pair of close losses Monday night in Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I play at Maize.
Newton lost the first game 6-2 and the second game 1-0.
Maize scored its sole run in the second game on a bases-loaded error with one out.
Maize pitcher Caleb Hicks needed just 55 pitches to go the distance, allowing a hit with four strikeouts.
Griffin Davis took the loss for the Railers, allowing an unearned run in 2.1 innings with three hits and two walks. Starter Camden Fenwick went four innings, allowing three hits with a strikeout.
Adrian Perez went two for three for Maize. Camden Jurgensen went two for four.
Josh Edson had Newton’s sole hit.
Newton scored first in the first game as Gavin Cusick hit a two-run triple in the top of the first inning.
Maize came back with three runs in the first inning, a run in the third and two in the sixth.
Adrian Perez threw a complete-game win for Maize, allowing six hits, three walks and four strikeouts. Ben Schmidt took the loss for Newton, allowing one earned run in 4.1 innings on seven hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Matt Eldridge finished the game, allowing two runs on four hits with two strikeouts.
Deriq Doty, Perez and Devon Nicholson each had two hits with an RBI for Maize, 12-7 overall and 8-3 in league play.
Newton is 1-16, 1-11 in league play, and plays at 4 p.m. Thursday at Andover Central.
