Hesston names

softball coach

HESSTON — Hesston College has named Christie Bell as its new softball coach, beginning her duties in the fall.

Bell succeeds longtime coach Andrew Sharp, who is stepping down at the end of the current season after nine seasons.

Bell is an assistant coach at St. Francis (Ill.), an NAIA school in Joliet. She is finishing her master’s degree at USF in health education.

“I am very excited and honored to be given the opportunity to lead the Hesston College softball program,” Bell said. “I would like to thank (Hesston athletic director) Chris Nachtigall and the administration for giving me this chance and for their support. I look forward to being in a Christian environment and back in Kansas. I believe in their program and I cannot wait to continue the winning tradition that coach Andrew Sharp has built.”

Bell is a native of Sanger, Texas. She played at Hutchinson Community College and Oklahoma Wesleyan, where she was an all-conference selection.

She coached at Permian High School in Odessa, Texas, and Estacado High School in Lubbock, before taking a position at USF, where she spent the last two seasons. The Fighting Saints were 29-11 this season, 17-5 in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference.

“Christie is committed to mentoring and developing young women on and off the field,” Nachtigall said. “We are confident she will not only add to our department but the Hesston College community as well.”

The Larks are currently 34-11, 15-5 in Jayhawk Conference play, winning a share of the conference title. The team begins NJCAA Division II District play at 10 a.m. Saturday in Topeka.
