HESSTON — The Hesston High School boys’ tennis team qualified three of its four entries to the Class 3-2-1A state tournament after a second-place finish Friday at the regional tournament in Hesston.
Central Plains won the tournament with 14 points, also qualifying three of four entries. Hesston and Sterling tied for second with 13 points each, but Hesston won the percentage of games won tie-breaker by less than .003. Smoky Valley was fourth at 10, followed by Hutchinson Trinity at four, Salina Sacred Heart at two and Ellinwood at two. Hillsboro was scoreless.
“We had a good day,” Hesston coach Mark Dahlsten said. “To qualify three entries out of this regional is very good as the field was very good. We look forward to competing next week in Kansas City.”
Hesston’s Logan Gamble won his first three matches without dropping a game. In the finals, Gamble fell to William Weiner of Sterling 4-6, 6-2, 6-1.
Gamble enters state play 28-5.
Cole Deutschendorf, opened the day 1-1. He downed Cade Schneider of Smoky Valley 6-3, 6-0 in the consolation semifinals to clinch a state berth. In the fifth-place match, Deutschedorf fell to J.J. Heredia of Central Plains 6-3, 6-3.
Deutschedorf enters state play 11-10.
The doubles team of Isaac Decker and Jeb Carlson took third at 3-1. The team fell to top-seeded and unbeaten Brett Liebl and Devin Ryan of Central Plains 6-0, 6-1.
In the third-place match, Decker and Carlson downed Paxton Hammeke and Lawson Osner of Central Plains 6-3, 6-2.
Decker and Carlson enter state play 15-11.
The doubles team of Ethan Moran and Ben Bollinger lost in the first round and end the season 8-15.
The state meet is Friday and Saturday at Harmon Park in Prairie Village.
