The Newton-Hesston girls’ swimmers closed out senior night with a dominant performance at the Newton Invitational II Thursday at the NHS pool.
Newton-Hesston entries won eight out of 12 events. The team had numerous time cuts, including a new school record.
The team of Addi Schroeder, Acacia Penner, Ashley Salgado and Annika Senn won the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:47.02, a new school record.
The team of Schroeder, Lauren Anton, Salgado and Senn won the 400-yard freestyle relay in 4:01.32.
“The girls have been eyeing the team record board for a long time and tonight they swam hard and earned their spot up there for the 200 free relay,” Newton coach Kim Powell said. “What a great way to end the regular season. So many great swims tonight from all of the girls. I’m really proud of their effort, and determination to dig deep to drop as much time as they did tonight. Looking forward to league and hoping for even more time cuts.”
Schroeder won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:20.18, followed by Jaden Anton in second in 2:32.93 and Salgado in third in 2:36.73. Schroeder and Salgado each had a season best by more than two seconds. Salgado also broke the state consideration time of 2:38.54.
Schroeder won the 50-yard freestyle in 25.60, a season best by .02 seconds.
Acacia Penner won the diving in 183.50, followed by Blazee Stahl in second in 178.30. Acacia Penner broke the required state score of 180, but lacked the required degree of difficulty to qualify.
Acacia Penner took second in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:10.53.
Senn won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:05.65, a season best by more than two seconds. Lauren Anton was third in 2:18.05.
Senn won the 100-yard freestyle in 56.90, a season best by 1.55 seconds.
Lauren Anton won the 500-yard freestyle in 6:06.17, a season best by .57 seconds.
Jaden Anton took second in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:08.57, followed by Salgado in third in 1:08.58. Both had season best times and both just missed the automatic state qualifying time of 1:08.15.

The team of Acacia Penner, Jaden Anton, Lauren Anton and Emily Penner took third in the 200-yard medley relay in 2:08.22.
Newton hosts the Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I at 1 p.m. May 11 at the NHS pool.
