NEWTON — First Bank of Newton will be merging with Intrust Financial Corporation, the holding company of Intrust Bank.

“Quite frankly, we are excited about it,” said Ray Penner, president of First Bank of Newton.

The target date for transition for First Bank of Newton into Intrust Bank is Nov. 11. Until that time, First Bank will continue to operate independently.

"We are very excited about this. It will bring opportunity to our customers and our community,” said Amy Mitchell, vice president of First Bank.

Penner told The Kansan that First Bank has had a “long relationship” with Intrust — the two companies have worked together for about 50 years.

First Bank leadership met with employees on Thursday morning to break the news.

“We are going to try and retain all the employees we can. Many of our employees have relationships they have developed with our customers and our goal is to keep those relationships,” Penner said. “You know, Intrust has a long history of supporting the communities they serve. They give back to organizations like United Way, local schools, civic organizations and so on.”
