A fire caused major damage to a home in the 500 block of East Eleventh Street in Newton Thursday evening.

"There's extensive damage to it," said Gary Crittenden, fire marshal with Newton Fire/EMS.

The Newton Police Department confirmed no one was home at the time of the fire, which was reported around 6 p.m.

"There were eight people who lived there," Crittenden said.

Levi Meredith was stopping by a friend's house when he noticed smoke pouring from the window of the home across the street.

"I thought somebody was just having a bad cooking (day)," Meredith said. "...I looked even closer and there was a fire."

The pair notified 911 and Newton Fire/EMS responded quickly, along with Newton police, Kansas Highway Patrol and the Hesston Fire Department.

The streets around the house were blocked off as emergency responders worked to put out the fire until around 8:30 p.m.

"The family is fine," Crittenden said. "The Red Cross and Salvation Army were both on scene last night."

Crittenden said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
