One of three convenience store/gas stations that operated under the LoneStar name in Newton that closed abruptly is in the process of reopening under new management and ownership.
Now called Jump Start, the store at 1608 E. First is undergoing renovations.
The store will be operated by Jump Start Stores Inc.
“We are a chain of 11 stores in and around the Wichita area,” said Kristin Ghere, marketing director for the chain. “We opened our 11th location in Newton in the former LoneStar location on First Street.”
The company operates a store in Sedgwick and one in Halstead, as well.
The company has been in operation under Phillip Near of Andover for about six years.
“We are locally owned and operated,” Ghere said. “You have the benefits of a locally owned chain here.”
The LoneStar stores closed abruptly about three months ago.
“We have started... just getting the doors open,” Ghere said. “You will see changes already inside with fresh paint and new interiors. Exteriors, within the next 60 days, you will see changes there, as well.”
There is not, at this time, plans for Jump Start to take ownership of the other two shuttered LoneStar locations — one on SE 36th by I-135 and the other at the intersection of Old 81 and Main Street.
“Presently, we only have the East First location,” Ghere said. “We have had great success with the growth of our company in and around the Wichita area, and that is where we intend to stay. We want to be your local convenience store chain. Newton provided us an opportunity to grow within this community.”
The store was approved for a cereal malt beverages license by the city commission at it's most recent city commission meeting.
Still to come are outdoor signs and new gas pumps with Jump Start logos. However, the store stands open for business even without those items complete.
