Self-defense class offered

Columbus Avenue Church of Christ will host a women's self-defense class from 10 a.m. to noon June 8 at the church, 104 Columbus Ave.

The class will be taught by Jeff Ostlund, assistant director of the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center. Participants will have the opportunity to learn situational awareness, victim/predator psychology and threat assessment.

The class is open to ages 12 and up.

YMCA, Red Cross team up for blood drive

Again this year, the Newton YMCA and the American Red Cross invite the community to roll up a sleeve and give blood to help save lives. This year’s Newton YMCA-sponsored drive will be from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 9 at the Newton YMCA, 701 E. Wheatridge.
