HESSTON — The Hesston College softball team ran its school-record winning streak to 19 games after sweeping Southeast (Neb.) Community College Monday night at the Hesston City Field.
The Larks won the first game 12-1 in five innings on the eight-run rule and the second game 7-4.
In the first game, Hesston took a 1-0 lead and broke the game open with five runs in the third inning and six more in the fourth. Southeast scored its sole run in the top of the fourth.
Chelsea Smith tossed a complete-game, two-hitter for Hesston, striking out 10 and allowing a walk.
Katelynn Holiday took the loss for Southeast.
Amy Bretado led the Larks at the plate, going two for three — both home runs — and driving in five. Kaylen Lassley went two for two with two RBIs. Jessie Miranda, Lexi Avalos, Paige Bittle and Adrianna Ruiz each added two hits. Bittle hit a solo home run. Avalos and Sadie Leatherman each added an RBI.
Kelsey Markey hit a solo home run for Southeast.
In the second game, Hesston took a 5-0 lead through four innings and held off a late Southeast comeback.
Lassley went two for two hitting with a home run and two RBIs. Amy Bretado hit a home run and drove in two. Bittle hit a solo home run. Miranda went two for three hitrting. Avalos went two for four with an RBI. Reece McCrary drove in a run.
Markey went two for three hitting for Southeast, with a solo home run. Briana Lonegan went two for three with an RBI. Abbi Greuter also drove in a run.
Bretado pitched four innings for the win, allowing one hit, one strikeout and three walks. Lassley went 2.1 innings, allowing four runs on six hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Smith finished the game for the save, striking out one.
Cassandra Evans took the loss for Southeast, allowing six runs on 10 hits with three walks and a strikeout. Bailey Rumery finished the game, allowing a run on two hits.
Southeast is 13-17. Hesston is 30-11 and hosts the Friends junior varsity at 5 p.m. today.
