If there was any bright side to the Newton High School girls’ soccer team’s 10-0 loss to Maize Tuesday night in Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I play at Fischer Field, the game didn’t take long to play.

The game was abandoned at the half on the 10-goal rule. The final Eagle goal came with 41 seconds left in the half.

Payton Eskridge led Maize in scoring with four goals. Reina Cline scored three goals. Kourtnee Davis scored two goals. Marissa Llamas added a goal.

Newton was outshot 21-1. Makaylee Ybarra had nine saves in goal for the Railers. Lilly Koehn had one save for Maize on a high floater midway in the half that proved tricky in the wind.

Newton coach Scott Jantzi could not be reached for comment after the game.

Maize improves to 6-2-1, 1-0 in league play.

Newton falls to 1-8, 0-1 in league play. Newton plays at 6:15 p.m. Thursday at Salina Central.
