MOUNDRIDGE — With a two-time defending state champion sprinter returning and three of the four members of a state champion relay, the Moundridge High School track team is ready to take on the season.

Brian Holloway returns for his ninth season as the Wildcats’ coach. He is assisted by Larry Diepenbrock.

The Moundridge girls placed fourth at state last year in Class 2A, while the boys were 12th. Moundridge drops down to Class 1A this year.

Four state medalists return for Moundridge — seniors Jamya O’Quinn, Ellika Ptacek and Katie Fiedler; and sophomore Emma Green.

O’Quinn is the defending state champion in the 100- and 200-meter dashes. O’Quinn, Ptacek and Green all were members of the state champion 4x100-meter relay, which set a meet record of 49.63 seconds.

Green took third in the 100-meter high hurdles last year. Ptacek took eighth in the 300-meter low hurdles. Senior Katie Fiedler took second in the 100-meter dash and eighth in the 200-meter dash.

Junior Sarah Brunk qualified for state in the high jump.

Another returning letterwinner is sophomore Kourtney Kaufman in the javelin.

“We do not have many numbers,” Hollway said. “Nine girls, seven boys, so team points may be hard to come by. Our 4x1 girls have a chance to repeat as state champs, plus have a good shot at breaking the 1A state record.”

Holloway looks for Berean Academy, Hutchinson Trinity and Bennington to be among the top contenders for the HOAL team title.
