EMPORIA — Bethel College senior Kyle Wilson opened the outdoor season for the Threshers by qualifying for the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics National Championships in both the shot put and discus Saturday at the Emporia State Invitational.

Kansas won the women’s competition with 114.5 points, followed by Barton County Community College at 90, Pittsburg State at 69, Fort Hays State at 66.5 and Washburn at 61.5. Bethel tied for 20th with two points.

Barton County won the men’s competition with 82 points, followed by Kansas at 62, Fore Hays State at 61.5, Pittsburg State at 57 and Hutchinson Community College at 45.

The Bethel men tied for 16th with 11 points.

The meet had 23 teams scoring in both men’s and women’s competition.

Wilson took fifth in the discus in 49.30 meters (161 feet, 9 inches), breaking the NAIA automatic qualifying mark of 49 meters. His mark is currently ranked second in the NAIA, 7.17 meters off the lead.

Wilson took eighth in the shot put in 16.36 meters (53-8 1/4), breaking the NAIA automatic qualifying mark of 15.85 meters. The mark is currently ranked fifth nationally in the NAIA. Wilson also set a new school record in the shot put.

"Kyle had a great opening day," Bethel coach Jeff Hoskisson said. "He got things going on his first throw in the discus and carried it over to the shot. It was nice to get the auto qualifiers in both events in the first meet. With that out of the way he can work on his technique and some really big throws."

Braylen Brewer took third in the 400-meter dash in 49.66.

"Braylen ran a really good race," Hoskisson said. "He got out well and was in good position at the 300-meter mark. The strong headwind down the finish stretch affected him a little but it was a great start to the outdoor season."

For the Bethel women, Alyjah Kennedy placed seventh in the triple jump in 11.20 meters (36-9), .45 meters off the automatic qualifying mark and .2 meters off the provisional qualifying mark.

It was Kennedy’s first meet in almost two years because of injuries.

"I am so proud of Alyjah," Hoskisson said. "This was her first meet in almost two years. The last time she was on the runway in a meet she ended up injuring herself which caused her to miss all of last year. She showed no fear today and had six really good jumps."

Jennifer Andres finished ninth in the 200-meter dash in 25.61 seconds. Andres was 10th in the 100-meter dash in 12.24 seconds, .26 seconds off the automatic qualifying time and .12 seconds off the provisional time.

Kristen Herzet finished 10th in the discus in 42.23 meters (138-6). The mark was 1.77 meters off the automatic qualifying mark and .17 meters off the provisional qualifying mark. It is still ranked third in the NAIA.

Herzet was ninth in the hammer throw in 43.25 meters (141-11), breaking a school record set by Sarah Nitzsche in 1997.

"Kristen had a really good day," Hoskisson said. "She just missed hitting the qualifier in the discus and had a really good hammer throw. She has been working hard in both events and her early work is paying off."

Bethel competes Saturday at the Tiger Invitational at the Cowley College Sports Complex in Arkansas City.
