The Newton High School boys’ basketball team didn’t show a lot of spring in its step against the eighth-ranked (KBCA, Class 6A) Campus Colts, falling 61-45 Tuesday night in AV-CTL I play at Ravenscroft Gym.

Campus made a run in the second quarter that the Railers were never able to recover from.

“The game plan was pretty good,” Newton coach Andy Preston said. “We moved the ball well in it. Then we started breaking down. We couldn’t hit shots. When they made their run, we didn’t respond well. We were careless with the ball. They started hitting shots — off-balance shots. Give Campus the credit tonight. They played harder. They played smarter. They played better than we did.”

The Colts sweep Newton in regular-season play.

For Campus, 13-4 overall and 8-2 in league play, Shawn Warrior and Sterling Chapman each scored 17 points. Thomas King added 10 points.

For Newton, Ty Berry scored 17 points. Damarius Peterson added 13.

Campus ended the first quarter on a 5-0 run to lead 13-9. Newton scored the first five points of the second quarter, followed by 14 straight from Campus. Damarius Peterson broke the run with a layup with 16 seconds left in the quarter, getting Newton back within 11, 27-16, at the half.

Campus opened the third quarter with a 5-0 run. Newton climbed back to within 10, but Campus got back out by 13 at the end of the period, 40-27.

After trading baskets early in the fourth quarter, Campus was able to pull out by as many as 20 down the stretch.

Newton falls to 10-7, 6-4 in league play, and hosts Andover at 7:30 p.m. Friday for homecoming. Andover is 10-7 after a 63-52 win over Valley Center.

“Andover has a kid that can score,” Preston said. “They are very athletic. They aren’t as big as Campus. They won some big games. We have to figure it out. We need a lot of soul searching. We don’t need a lot of yelling and screaming. We were too passive tonight. In our zone, we were passive. We shouldn’t lower our intensity. We lost our sense of urgency.”
