LINDSBORG — The Bethel College women’s basketball team claimed win no. 17 Saturday night in Lindsborg, stopping Bethany 68-64 in KCAC play.

The Threshers break the school record for most wins in a season with six games remaining.

Jade Brown led the Threshers with 20 points and nine rebounds. Karlie Schroeder scored 15 points and Kendall Michalski added 12.

Bethel led 19-14 after the first quarter, 33-32 at the half and 48-42 after three quarters. Bethel led by as many as 12 in the fourth quarter, but the Swedes charged back to within two with 10 seconds remaining before Riley Schmieder hit two free throws with nine seconds remaining.

Bethany was led by Kelsi Mueller with 12 points. Erin Richardson and Hannah Ferguson each added 10 points.

Bethel is 17-6, 12-6 in KCAC play, and hosts 11th-ranked Sterling at 6 p.m. Wednesday. Bethel fell to the Warriors 79-70 Dec. 9 in Sterling. The Warriors are 22-2 and tied with Tabor atop the conference standings at 17-2.

LINDSBORG — The Bethel College men’s basketball team dropped its third straight game, falling to Bethany 77-69 Saturday in KCAC play in Lindsborg.

Bethel trailed 41-28 at the half. The Threshers did pull to within four early in the second half, but got no closer.

Bethany, 11-12 overall and 8-10 in KCAC play, was led by Tyler Larkin with 18 points. Reed Stephens scored 15 points. Kristijan Joksimovic scored 13 points and Lavaris Duncan scored 11 points.

Dakota Foster led Bethel with 18 points, followed by Kiesean Weiher with 17, Poe Bryant with 15 and Terrell Marshall with 13. Jaylon Scott had 11 rebounds.

Bethel hosts Sterling at 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Railers claim

title at Welton

GARDEN CITY — The Newton High School wrestling team claimed a title and a second-place finish Friday and Saturday at the 61st Rocky Welton Invitational in Garden City.

Newton was 10th out of 42 teams in the team standings.

Goddard won the meet at 220, followed by Pueblo (Colo.) East at 206, Kearney (Neb.) at 176.5, Garden City (Brown) at 141.5 and Randall at 131.5. Newton scored 95.5 points.

Newton was led by Wyatt Hendrickson at 220 pounds, who finished 4-0 to win the titles. Hendrickson claimed a 9-3 decision over Cade Lautt of St. James Academy in the finals in a clash of the top-two ranked wrestlers in Class 5A in the weight class.

Hendrickson improves to 28-0, while Lautt drops to 42-2.

Hendrickson won his other three matches by fall in 79 seconds or less.

Grant Treaster reached the finals with four win, falling to Isaiah Gamez of LaJunta (Colo.) in the finals in 4:36. Gamez improves to 17-0, while Treaster is 21-3.

Colin Bybee finished eighth at 106 pounds. Boone Roberson was ninth at 138 pounds. Dante Harper finished ninth at 170 pounds. Sawyer Mock finished 11th at 126 pounds.

Josh Edson finished 1-2 at 145 pounds. Clayton Kaufman was 0-2 at 113 pounds. Trevor Waldrop finished 0-2 at 152 pounds.

Newton competes at 6 p.m. Thursday in a dual meet against Campus in Haysville.
