The Bishop Miege Stags are in the championship game of the Newton Invitational Tournament of Champions for the seventh straight year after a 71-44 win over Andover Central Friday night at Ravenscroft Gym.

Miege, 9-0, takes on cross-county foe Olathe Northwest in the finals at 5:45 p.m. today. Central, 6-4, faces Bishop Carroll for third place at 4 p.m.

Johnni Gonzalez led Miege with 17 points. Faith Hawthorne added 15.

Central was led by Bailey Wilborn with 14 points and freshman Brittany Harshaw with 13. Harshaw needs

Miege used eight Central turnovers to take a 16-6 lead in the first quarter. Central was able to stay with the Stags early in the second quarter with the outside shot, but Meige pulled away by 17 at the end of the period, 35-18.

The Stags opened the third quarter with a 9-0 run. Miege led 55-30 at the end of the quarter.

Miege got within one point of starting the 30-point running clock late in the fourth quarter.

The Olathe Northwest Ravens won the Newton Invitational girls’ basketball tournament’s “Battle of the Birds,” stopping the Bishop Carroll Golden Eagles 57-50 in semifinal play Friday at Ravenscroft Gym.

Northwest, 9-3, reaches the tournament finals for the fifth time in the team’s ninth appearance in the tournament. The Ravens will play at 5:45 p.m. today. Bishop Carroll, 7-6, will play in the third-place game at 4 p.m. Carroll plays for third for the third straight year.

Sarah Beth Gueldner led the Ravens with 19 points, followed by Erika Boeh with 17 and Mary Reiber with 11.

Britney Ho led Carroll with 17 points. Allison McFarren added 11 points.

Northwest jumped out to a 9-0 lead, extending it to 13-2. The Ravens led 19-9 at the end of the quarter.

Carroll was able to get back in the game in the second quarter, trailing 25-21 at the half.

Northwest led 44-32 at the end of the third period. The Ravens were able to pull away by as many as 13 in the final period. Carroll was able to get within seven on a trey at the buzzer.

The Shawnee Mission Northwest Cougars held Kapaun-Mt. Carmel to four of 36 shooting with 23 turnovers in a 60-12 win in the consolation semifinals of the 43rd Newton Invitational Tournament at Ravenscroft Gym.

It was the largest margin of victory and the lowest offensive output for a team since Bishop Miege beat Kapaun 57-17 in the first round of the 2016 tournament.

Tamara Harris-Weber led Northwest with 13 points. Hannah Black added 10 points.

Ella Anciaux scored all but one of Kapaun’s points.

Northwest jumped out 13-1 in the first four minutes of play. Kapaun took a time out, but gave up two more points in the run before Anciaux hit a layup with 1:42 left in the period for the Crusaders’ first field goal of the game. The Cougars led 19-3 at the end of the period.

Northwest scored the first five points of the second quarter. Anciaux broke the shutout with one of two free throws and a layup. Northwest led 28-6 at the half.

Kapaun shot 10 percent from the field in the first half (two for 20) and had 10 turnovers. Northwest was 11 of 29 shooting with three turnovers.

The Cougars made a 17-4 run to start the third quarter. Northwest led 53-12 at the end of the period to ensure the 30-point running clock in the fourth.

Kapaun had 10 turnovers in the third quarter.

Northwest won the fourth quarter 7-0.
