Hog roast coming

The annual Newton High School Fine Arts Booster Club Whole Hog Roast will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Feb. 15 in the commons area of Newton High School during the boys and girls baseketball games against Andover. 

Meals are $7 including a roast pork sandwich, chips, baked beans, pickle spear, pie and a drink. Cost of pie and a drink is $3. Additional sandwiches are $3.

Proceeds from the event will be used for Fine Arts scholarships, classrom projects and student support.


Holiday means trash, recycling change

The City of Newton will observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Jan. 21, as a holiday altering the curbside trash and recycling collection schedule.
Trash and recycling normally collected  Monday, Jan. 21 will be collected Jan. 22.

Trash and recycling normally collected on Tuesday, Jan. 22 will be collected Jan. 23.

The remaining trash and recycling schedule for that week will be unchanged.


Gallery to host Kansas Day event

The public is invited to “A Kansas Day Trip,” presented by photographer Jeff Heidel at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 29 at Carriage Factory Art Gallery.

Heidel will take visitors on a visual journey around Kansas from the Flint Hills to Teter Rock and beyond in honor of Kansas Day. The event is free and open to the public.

Heidel is a landscape and wildlife photographer who was born and raised in Newton.  His artistic progression began in high school.

The Carriage Factory Art Gallery, located at 128 E. Sixth St. in Newton, is open
