Hesston takes

7th at Ellsworth

ELLSWORTH — The Hesston High School wrestling team placed seventh out of 12 teams Saturday at the Ellsworth Invitational.

Hoisington won the meet at 176.5, followed by Hill City at 143, Ellsworth at 104, Russell at 99.5 and Garden Plain at 89.

Hesston scored 83 points.

The Swathers were led by Jason Hecht, who took second at 132 pounds. Hecht fell in the finals to Cole Steinert of Hoisington 10-2.

Riley Slater finished fourth at 126 pounds at 1-3. Garrett Slater finished fourth at 145 pounds at 2-3. Owen O’Halloran finished fourth at 182 pounds at 1-3. Alex Koehn finished fourth at heavyweight at 2-3.

Malachi Holmes finished fifth at 152 pounds at 3-2. Cody Wohlgemuth finished fifth at 160 pounds at 2-2.

Michael Friesen finished seventh at 138 pounds at 2-3.

“We were pleased with our effort today," Hesston coach Doug Broadfoot said. "All eight of the wrestlers we took won matches and scored team points allowing us to score 25 more points than we did last year at this tournament. Owen O’Halloran, Jason Hecht, Riley Slater and Alex Koehn each wrestled state medalist caliber wrestlers, so they won’t face anyone tougher the rest of the season than what they saw today. Hecht held his own for most of the championship match against the undefeated wrestler from Hoisington, but he needs to be better wrestling on his feet if he wants to beat him. O’Halloran rebounded from a first round loss to beat a good Garden Plain wrestler. After a first round win, Riley Slater wrestled two state ranked wrestlers in a row at 126 pounds. Alex Koehn had a similar experience after first- and second-round wins.”

Hesston competes Friday and Saturday at the Halstead Invitational.
