HOUSTON — The Bethel College men’s basketball team ended the calendar year with a three-game winning streak, stopping St. Thomas-Houston 89-80 Saturday night in the St. Thomas Classic.

The win was Bethel’s fourth in the last five games.

Bethel jumped out to a 16-4 lead in the first 4 1/2 minutes of play. The Threshers led by as many as 22 in the first half, but the Celts cut that margin to nine at intermission.

St. Thomas drew within one at the 14:16 mark of the second half. Bethel replied with an 8-0 run. The closest the Celts got from that point was three points with 6:14 to play.

Bethel put five players in double figures in scoring.

Keisean Weiher led Bethel with 21 points. Garrett White scored 19 points off the bench. Sam Morgan scored 14 points. Dakota Foster and Terrell Marshall each had 11 points. Jaylon Scott had 10 rebounds and finished a point shy of a double-double.

Weiher and White each had season highs. It was just the third varsity game of the season for White.

Paris Marquez scored 22 points to lead St. Thomas, 10-4. Orowo Eleyae scored 19 points. Nathan Thormaehlen and Cameron Gims each scored 10 points.

Bethel finished the game 29 of 59 shooting, 14 of 25 from 3-point range. St. Thomas, an NAIA Division I school, hit 28 of 64 from the field, including seven of 28 from 3-point range.

FRIDAY’S GAME — For the second time this season, the Bethel College men’s basketball team went into overtime against a team from a higher classification.

After dropping a 101-96 double-overtime exhibition to NCAA Division II Fort Hays State 11 days ago, the Threshers traveled to Houston for the St. Thomas Classic, facing NAIA Division I Huston-Tillotson University.

After two overtimes, the Threshers came out on top 82-79.

Dakota Foster returned to the lineup after missing the past three weeks and hit a 3-pointer for the game winner.

Foster finished the game with 21 points. Kiesean Weiher came off the bench to score 14 points. Garrett White also scored 14 points. Jaylon Scott scored 12 points with 12 rebounds. Poe Bryant scored 10 points.

Huston-Tillotson, 5-3, was led by Alexandre Doche with 29 points and 18 rebounds. Courtney Julien scored 25 points. Derrick Cook scored 10 points.

The two teams combined for 105 rebounds, 54 for Huston-Tillotson and 51 for Bethel. Bethel outscored the Rams 36-18 from 3-point range.

Bethel is 9-6 and hosts Southwestern at 7 p.m. Wednesday to resume KCAC play. The Moundbuilders are ranked 12th in the NAIA Division II poll and are 12-1, 8-1 in conference play.
