The Newton High School wrestling team had a pair of close dual meet wins to open the season.
The Railers dominated Salina South Thursday in Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I competition at Ravenscroft Gym, winning 60-21.
Newton won 10 of the 14 matches, eight by pin and two by forfeit where South was open. South won three by pin and one by decision.
The Railers improve to 3-0 in dual meets, all in league meets.
“We talked a little about heart in the (wrestling) room,” Newton coach Tommy Edgmon said. “When you get down, you come back. We had a couple of guys did that. They got down, came around in the second period and stuck them. A lot of that was things are going to happen, but the second period is a different period.”
The defining match for the Railers came at 182 pounds, where Newton freshman Trent Henrich fell behind South’s Josue Escalante 5-0 after the first period, holding off a pin. In the second period, Henrich scored a takedown and a pin.
Grant Treaster opened action on the mat with a first-period pin against South’s Joey Priester at 120 pounds.
At 138 pounds, Boone Roberson needed just 42 seconds to pin South’s Jordan Blochlinger. At 145 pounds, Josh Edson needed just 46 seconds to pin South’s Kameron Reeves. At 220 pounds, Newton’s Wyatt Hendrickson had the shortest match of the night, pinning Gage Roberts in 34 seconds.
At 160 pounds, Kenyon Forest pinned South’s Kenny Nelson in the third period. At 170 pounds, Dante Harper pinned South’s Isaac Beckman in the second period. At 195 pounds, Diego Arellano fell behind early to South’s Malachi Williams, but came back for a second-period pin.
Colin Bybee and Gaige Llamas each won by forfeit at 106 and 113 pounds respectively.
At 126 pounds, Newton’s Sawyer Mock fell behind 4-0 to South’s Carson Ochoa, but came back to lead 6-4 at the end of the first period. Ochoa led 8-7 through two periods. Mock scored an escape early in the third to tie the match. Mock gave up a takedown with three seconds left to drop a 10-8 decision, the only match of the night not to end by fall.
Newton’s Spencer Steinmetz lost to South’s Caleb Copeland by fall in the third period at 132 pounds. Derrek Sherwood of South pinned Newton’s Trevor Waldrop in the first period at 152 pounds. Kayson Dietz of South pinned Garret Garnica of Newton in the third period at heavyweight.
“We’re 3-0, but we have a tough, tough January,” Edgmon said. “We go out of town to Jenks, Okla., the TOC and Garden City. We have progressed as things have gone forward and I think we’ll rise to the challenge.”
Newton competes at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Bishop Carroll Invitational. The Railers are the defending champions of the tournament. Newton doesn’t have another dual meet until Jan. 17 at Derby.
“We came back with a victory last year,” Edgmon said. “We look to getting back on the podium this year as well. We’re still trying to learn our weaknesses and our strengths - improve on our weaknesses and build on our strengths. We need to get in those positions where we can score points.”
