The Sand Creek Station golf course has held a number of prestigious tournaments in its lifetime, but for the first time, a professional event has been scheduled.

The Sand Creek Station Championships will be played May 6 to 11 as part of the All Pro Tour.

“This event will add to our already accomplished portfolio of top level championships, and will offer a true test to the field,” Sand Creek Station general manager Chris Tuohey said. “On behalf of our Newton community and KemperSports, we are honored to be selected as a host venue for one of the nation’s elite professional tours.”

The All Pro Tour, formerly known as the Adams Tight Lies Tour, is a third-tier professional tour that ranks just behind the PGA Tour and the Tour (also run by the PGA).

Alumni of the tour include Mark Hensby, J.L. Lewis, Tim Herron, Cameron Beckman, Bubba Watson, and Ryan Palmer.

There are 14 events in six states (Mississippi, Louisiana, Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Texas). The other Kansas event is the Colbert Charity Classic July 17 to 20 in Manhattan. All of the tournaments except one have a total purse of $125,000 with $20,000 going to the winner. The season-opening tournament has a purse of $150,000.

The tournaments are four rounds with a maximum entry of 144. The top 35 percent (50), plus ties, advance to the final two rounds.

A pro-am will be held May 7. There also will be a junior clinic and a welcoming reception. Volunteer opportunities also are available.

Registration for the tournament begins Jan. 4 and runs through May 6. Registration and membership information is available on the tour’s Website
