HESSTON — The Hesston High School boys’ basketball team failed to find any kind of flow in its game, falling to Emporia 63-39 Thursday night in the Hesston Classic.

The Spartans hit 24 of 41 from the field, while Hesston was 16 of 34. Hesston was outscored 18-0 from 3-point range.

“It snowballed,” Hesston coach Greg Raleigh said. “They’re pretty good. We are extremely young. We played three freshmen a lot — three freshmen and three sophomore. You just have to come back ready to play tomorrow.”

Charles Snyder led the 2-0 Spartans with 17 points. Jace Stewart added 11. Eight other Emporia players scored.

Andrew Schmidt led Hesston with nine points.

Hesston fell behind 10-4 in the first four minutes of play. After a time out, the Swathers gave up another basket on a turnover and trailed 16-8 at the end of the period. Hesston had eight turnovers in the period.

Hesston was outscored 18-2 to start the second quarter. The Swathers trailed 38-17 at the half.

Emporia led by 30 late in the period. Hesston got within 26, but the Spartans led 57-29 at the end of the quarter. Emporia hit a pair of free throws early in the fourth quarter to start the running clock.

Hesston is 2-1 and plays Wichita Independent at 8:30 p.m. today. Independent fell to Nickerson earlier in the day.

“They’re athletic,” Raleigh said. “We’ll have to be ready. We seen one second of zone yet this year. We’ll see it tomorrow. We’ll have to make sure our shooters are ready. Hopefully, we’re resilient and bounce back. It’s still early in the year and we’ll get better.”
