Things fell apart in the second half of the season finale for the Bethel College men’s soccer team, falling to Bethany 6-0 Tuesday on Senior Night in KCAC play at Joe W. Goering Field.
All six Swede goals came in the second half. Melvin Akingbo scored three goals for the Swedes, 4-14 overall and 2-9 in KCAC play. Jack Rhys-Jones and Lisandro Nunez each scored a goal with an assist. Javier Zaragoza also scored a goal.
“This was a disappointing ending to a very tough season,” Bethel coach James Cottage said. “I can’t fault their effort. I can’t fault their hard work, but a couple of bad things happened in that half that led it to a bit of an avalanche of goals.”
Bethel outshot the Swedes 22-16 for the game, but was outshot 14-11 on goal. Michael Wick had 11 saves in goal for Bethany. Kobi Russom had eight saves in goal for Bethel, finishing the season with 140, one shy of the school record for saves in a season.
Bethel had just 11 players dressed for the game.
“We had some injuries and things that happened,” Cottage said. “We have to move on from there.”
Bethel controlled possession for much of the first half and held an 8-4 advantage in total shots. The Threshers missed several chances late in the game.
Bethel’s Chris Torres had two point-blank shots saved back-to-back in the 86th minute.
A Bethel goal in the 74th minute on a rebounded shot was called back as offside.
Bethel ends the season 1-14-2, 1-9-2 in KCAC play. Bethel loses nine seniors.
“We have some good returners, but we’re going to have a large recruiting class coming in,” Cottage said. “I think (the returners) have to believe in the program we’re going to build and move in the right direction. We have to bring in a new crop of boys.”
