Brenna Mitchell scored on an unassisted goal in the 103rd minute to lead Bethany to a 1-0 win over Bethel Tuesday night in KCAC play at Joe W. Goering Field on Senior Night.

Bethany improves to 11-5-2, 6-5-1 in KCAC play. The Swedes moved up the fifth seed in the upcoming KCAC post-season tournament and will play at Friends Friday in the opening round.

“This game was kind of the story of our year,” Bethel coach Alex Hagan said. “I look back, and there were a lot of games we should have won. We had two ties where we had a chance to win. We were up 2-0 against Sterling. We finished that game with 10 players. We win those games and we finish with six wins in conference, which is a drastic change from last year. From last year to this year, there has been a lot of progression. We have a lot of underclassmen. A lot of our players are still young — freshmen and sophomores moving on. We have a lot of things to look forward to and look to make a lot of improvement next year.”

Bethel was outshot 16-5, but shots on goal were even at 4-4. Destinee Wells had four saves for the shutout for Bethany. Ashtyn Brown had three saves for Bethel.

Bethel controlled possession early. Shots were even in the first half at three each, but Bethel had two on target to none for the Swedes.

Bethany opened up the attack in the second half with a pair of shots early in the period, but the Thresher defense adapted. Bethel had a strong shot in the 81st minute off a 30-yard direct kick, the team’s first shot on a direct kick. Bethany got a pair of shots on the counter attack — one that went off the post and another blocked by Bekah Tonn inside Bethel’s six-yard box.

Each team had a couple of chances in the final minutes, but failed to finish.

Bethany had three shots in the first half of extra time, but none were on goal.

“We’ve done that a lot this year,” Hagan said. “We’ve had a number of players injured, so we’ve been low on numbers. As we get tired in the second half, we lose a little bit.”

Bethel ends the season 3-11-2, 2-8-2 in KCAC play for 11th, two games out of the final post-season spot. The Threshers were 1-1-2 in overtime games this season.

Bethel loses three seniors — Rachel Craft, Bethany Montoya and Vivian Gonzalez.

“We’re hoping to bring in a lot of players next year,” Hagan said. “We hope to bring in about 14 players next year. … The new season starts tomorrow. Even though we just finished, our preparation begins. We’ll work a lot in the spring. We’ll play some spring games. In the past, we never had the chance to play in the spring. We have a lot of good things to look forward to.”
