CRETE, Neb. — The first win for the Bethel College men’s basketball team under first-year head coach Jayson Artaz came against Great Plains Athletic Conference power Doane 77-69 Tuesday night at the Haddix Center in Crete.

The Tigers entered the game receiving votes in the NAIA Division II pre-season poll and was picked to finish fourth in the GPAC.

Bethel freshman Jaylon Scott led the Threshers with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Poe Bryant and Dakota Foster each scored 15 points. Terrell Marshall scored 11 points.

Bethel fell behind by 10 points in the first 4:10 of the game. Down 11 with 6:12 remaining in the first half, Bethel made a 20-10 run capped by a pair of Kiesean Weiher free throws with one second left in the period. Bethel trailed 41-40 at the half.

The Threshers made a 15-0 run to open the second half. The Tigers got within six with 4:24 remaining. The Threshers responded and pushed the lead back to 12.

Bethel hit 11 of 22 from 3-point range, while Doane, 1-1, was six of 26 from beyond the arc.

Nick Kornieck and Koh Flippin each scored 19 points for Doane. Trace Tupper scored 11 points.

Bethel plays this weekend at the McPherson Classic, facing NAIA Division I Bacone College (0-0) at 4 p.m. Friday and NCCAA Dallas Christian (0-1) at 2 p.m. Saturday.
