The Newton High School gymnastics team claimed eight individual medals and a fourth-place finish Saturday at the seven-team Newton Invitational at Ravenscroft Gym.
Lawrence edged cross-town rival Lawrence Free State 98.575-98.15 for the team title. Emporia edged Newton for third place 93.85-93.375. Olathe South was fifth at 90.475, followed by Olathe North at 85.75 and Shawnee Mission West at 70.25.
“We hit well,” Newton coach JoAnne Thaw said. “We still don’t have enough girls on bars to get a really big score. We’re coming along. We have some young girls that are really starting to come around. We don’t have any seniors, so we have a lot we can do.”
Talia Gay of Free State won the all-around at 35.95. Gay won the vault at 9.1, the uneven parallel bars at 9.2 and the balance beam at 8.6.
Haylee Weiss of Emporia won the floor exercises at 9.2.
Newton was led by Toria Thaw, who placed fourth in all-around at 33.125. Thaw placed third in the vault at 8.8 and third on the beam at 8.125. Thaw was fourth on the bars at 7.5 and fifth on the floor at 8.7 to claim five medals.
“My scores were OK,” Toria Thaw said. “There were times I felt a little wobbly. I think I could have done a little bit better. I’m starting to work on the things I will need to have when I get to state. I didn’t do too much in the summer. I worked about three hours a day in the summer before we started. For state, I need to work on my vault. I still have a few other things.”
Becca Meyer was sixth in all-around at 31.9. Meyer was fifth in the vault at 8.6 and sixth on the floor at 8.65 for three medals. Meyer also scored a 7.15 on bars, one spot out of medal contention and a 7.5 on beam.
Elise Jantz scored an 8.1 on vault, a 5.8 on bars, a 6.45 on beam and an 8.0 on floor for a 28.35 all-around.
Acacia Penner scored a 7.8 on vault and a 7.9 on floor. Molly Stahl scored a 6.375 on beam and a 7.0 on floor.
Enyisha Peterson scored a 7.0 on vault. Rylie Pierce scored a 5.95 on beam.
“Becca is really starting to come around,” JoAnne Thaw said. “She’s doing much better than last year. I don’t know if we have enough points to get to state as a team, but Becca and Toria should both make it. They take the four best scores and average them (then the top eight teams qualify). The Lawrence meet didn’t count because they didn’t have bars there, and that really hurt us, because we scored really well there. It was nice to see Emporia do well. They have always seemed to be last, but I’m happy for them to be where they are at. They have one who could be a champion.”
Newton has just three meets remaining before state. Newton competes at 6 p.m. today at Olathe North, followed by a dual meet with Emporia at 6 p.m. Monday at home and Oct. 11 at the Shawnee Mission South Invitational.
“The Olathe meet will be varsity and JV, so that will be nice,” JoAnne Thaw said. “They all get to go.”
