MAIZE — It may be cold consolation for the Newton High School football team, but the Railer offense couldn’t do what three other teams could do against Maize Friday at K.T. Woodman Stadium in Maize — and that was score.

The Railers fell to the Eagles 45-0 in Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I play — the fourth straight shutout for Maize. Newton is shut out for the first time this season, falling to 1-3, 0-3 in AV-CTL I play.

Caden Cox rushed for 106 yards on 17 carries with five touchdowns. Caleb Grill hit 12 of 19 passes for 155 yards with an interception.

Newton was led by Colton Davis who had 24 carries for 86 yards rushing and hit eight of 21 passes for 70 yards.

“Offensively, we have to move the ball and score,” Newton coach Chris Jaax said. “We can’t have three and outs. We just couldn’t sustain anything. We couldn’t be consistent. We just have to get better. We have to get ready for next week. This experience was not fun.”

Maize needed just six plays to score as Cox ran the ball in from two yards out. The Railer defense made a stop on the following possession, but Maize scored on a 68-yard Preven Christon punt return.

Cox added two more touchdown runs in the first half of one and 20 yards. Maize missed its third PAT attempt when a pass out of a swinging-gate formation was short. Both scores were on short drives after short Newton punts.

Newton had a couple drives that ended in Maize territory. Maize held a 196-132 advantage in total offense in the first half.

Newton fumbled away the ball on its first play of the second half at the Railer 34. Five plays later, Cox ran the ball in from five yards out. Maize converted on a two-point conversion run.

Another punt return for a touchdown was called back for a penalty. Newton stopped the drive at the 13, where Hunter Clark nailed a 30-yard field goal.

Newton was stopped on downs at its own 36 early in the fourth quarter. Three plays later, Cox ran it in from 27 yards. The score kicked off the running clock.

Newton made one more foray into Maize territory, but the drive ended on the Eagle 30 with 3:10 to play.

Newton takes on 1-3 Hutchinson at 7 p.m. Friday for homecoming. Hutchinson lost to Salina Central 62-20.

“We have to take out hats off to Maize,” Jaax said. “We just have to get better. It’s a frustrating performance. Our kids fought hard, so I’m disappointed for them.”
