After a strong 57 minutes, the Newton High School boys’ soccer team fell apart in the last 23, falling to Goddard Eisenhower 5-1 Thursday at Fischer Field.

Newton led 1-0 at the half, but struggled late in the second half.

“We came out and played well,” Newton coach Scott Jantzi said. “We held them doing much. They weren’t getting quality shots. I told them at halftime, that they would make adjustments and come at us, and they took us on one-v-one. Nine times out of 10, they were able to beat us. We have to do a much better job with teams that have speed. We have to slow them down. We need to do a much better job when balls have to be won. We couldn’t keep possession up top (in the second half). They did a much better job in the midfield. We played a good 80 minutes the last game, and a lot of energy was spent then. We tried to rotate guys through the midfield, but they kept attacking us.”

Fernando Vidrio scored a goal with two assists to lead Eisenhower, 6-3. Ivan Mena-Rivera, Carlos Vidrio, Ian Young and Cory Gleason each added a goal. Ethan Doud had three assists.

Mena-Rivera tied the game with a goal in the 58th minute. Carlos Vidrio scored the game-winner in the 63rd minute. Eisenhower put away three goals in the final 7 1/2 minutes to preserve the win.

Newton was outshot 15-4, 10-0 in the second half. Kaleb Wessley had three saves in goal for Eisenhower. Selvin Abrego had 10 saves in goal for Newton.

Newton took the first three shots of the game. Eisenhower took the next five. Jose Moreno put Newton ahead when he took a ball off an Eisenhower defender and shot from about 25 yards out.

Newton drops to 2-6 and opens Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I play at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at home against Hutchinson. The Salt Hawks are 2-5-1.

“We match up very well against them,” Jantzi said. “We just have to put two halves together. That’s what I’ve been preaching to them all year long.”
