The Bethel College women’s soccer team opened KCAC play with a 2-1 overtime win over Saint Mary Wednesday at Joe W. Goering Field.

Emma Sandstoe scored the gamewinner in the 105th minute with an assist from Bekah Tonn.

The Spires scored in the 38th minute on a goal by Justine Brown. Bethel tied the game in the 59th minute on a goal from Alayna Wallace.

Bethel was outshot 18-9, 7-3 on goal. Ashtyn Brown had six saves in goal for Bethel to collect the win. Emilie Korenek had one save for the Spires, 0-6.

Bethel is 2-3 and faces 17th-ranked Oklahoma Wesleyan at 5:30 p.m. Saturday in Bartlesville, Okla.

The Bethel College men’s soccer team is still looking for its first win of the season for first-year coach James Cottage, but did get him his first point for the Threshers with a 2-2 tie against Saint Mary in the KCAC opener.

Jose Rojas scored a goal with an assist for the Threshers. Aymane Fahmi also scored for Bethel. Chris Torres had an assist.

Brian Alvarez and Rodney Smith each had a goal for Saint Mary. Smith scored in the 85th minute to send the game into overtime.

Bethel was outshot 17-10, 12-5 on goal. Kobi Russom had 10 saves for the Threshers. Tavita Ploetz had two saves in 90 minutes for the Spires, 2-3-1. Blake Kuehl had a save in overtime.

Bethel is 0-5-1 and takes on third-ranked Oklahoma Wesleyan at 8 p.m. Saturday in Bartlesville, Okla.

LEAVENWORTH — The Bethel College volleyball team fell to Saint Mary in three sets Wednesday in KCAC play in Leavenworth.

Bethel fell 25-22, 25-17, 25-18.

Cody Offerle led USM with 12 kills, followed by Angela Wade with 10. Bailey Wright set 17 assists, followed by Ashley Van Gleson with 15. Van Gleson served three aces, followed by Bianca Asheim and Offerle with two each. Katy Koepke had 12 digs, followed by Wright and Adeline Pagan-Sanchez with 10 each. Aly Camacho downed six blocks.

For Bethel, Nicole Klusener had eight kills. Sabrina Lowe set seven asissts and served two aces. Rachel Bustillos had 11 digs, followed by Klusener with nine. Klusener downed three blocks.

Saint Mary improves to 8-7, 1-0 in KCAC play. Bethel drops to 3-10, 0-2 in KCAC play. Bethel plays at 3 p.m. Friday at Sterling with Friends in a pair of non-conference duals.

Larks sweep

Allen County

IOLA — The Hesston College volleyball team claimed a three-set win over Allen County Community College Wednesday in Jayhawk Conference play in Iola.

Hesston won 25-21, 25-15, 25-12.

The win was the first ever for the Larks since joining the conference this fall.

Jade Gleason had 12 kills for Hesston. Faith Hallmark set 25 assists. Breann Gomez served three acesm followed by Paulina Diaz and Kylee Kasselman with two each. Annalys Hanna had 14 digs, followed by Hallmark with 12. Gleason downed three blocks.

Allen County’s stats were not listed.

Hesston is 6-10, 1-2 in Jayhawk Conference East play and plays Tuesday at Cloud County Community College.
