A couple of mistakes in the first half and a couple of missed opportunities in the second took their toll on the Bethel College men’s soccer team in a 3-1 loss to Central Christian Tuesday night in non-conference play at Joe W. Goering Field in North Newton.

Leslie Feh scored two goals for the 3-0 Tigers. Matias Nunez added a goal with an assist.

“After a very poor first half, we were able to turn it around after halftime,” Bethel coach James Cottage said. “We played with a lot more energy, especially Chris Torres and Jose Rojas. Their play up top was superb. We just couldn’t find the back of the net, which has been our problem. We played really well in the second half. Central worked hard and played well, but their second and third goals were our mistakes. We just have to be better in the back.”

Central scored in the 13th minute when Matias Nunez hit a long crossing pass in front of the Bethel goal that Leslie Feh was able to punch in.

In the 27th minute, a Bethel defender trying to send the ball back to the keeper, instead sent it to Nunez, who was able to convert the breakaway. Feh scored on a breakaway in the 38th minute.

The Threshers scored on a Rojas breakaway in the 56th minute, sprung open on a pass from Torres.

Bethel had another one-versus-goalkeeper chance just minutes later and had several chances late in the game that the Threshers couldn’t finish.

Bethel’s Randall Schmidt was sent off late in the game for a holding foul during a Central breakaway.

Bethel was outshot 14-12, 7-5 on goal. Antonio Ramirez Villa had four saves for the Tigers. Kobi Russom had four saves for Bethel.

Bethel falls to 0-3 and plays at 7 p.m. Friday in Wichita against NCAA Division II Newman University, which is 1-1.

“That will be a good game for us,” Cottage said. “It will be played in front of a crowd. It’s a local rivalry for us. It will be another test for us.”
