WICHITA — The Newton High School boys’ soccer team was on the defense for most of the game Monday morning in the opening round of the top bracket of the Titan Classic.
Corbin Mai scored on a long crossing pass on the backside of the goal in the 57th minute to give Kapaun-Mt. Carmel a 1-0 win.
Newton, 1-2, faces Maize at 4 p.m. Thursday in the consolation semifinals. Kapaun, 1-1, meets rival Bishop Carroll at 6 p.m. Thursday in the championship semifinals.
“They controlled the ball well,” Newton coach Scott Jantzi said. “They passed the ball well. For the most part, we did a good job of keeping them in front of us. They ran a 3-5-2, which is what hurt us against McPherson (in a 4-1 McPherson win in the season opener). We played better against it today. One-nil against Kapaun is good. They are usually a solid team.”
Kapaun beat Newton 3-0 last year in the state quarterfinals en route to a third-place finish.
Kapaun held a 12-2 advantage in total shots. Selvin Abrego had seven saves against eight shots on goal for the Railers. J.D. Mash stopped both Newton shots for the clean sheet.
“Selvin made huge improvements over the summer,” Jantzi said. “He has played with a lot more confidence. He’s going to get better as he gains more experience out there.”
Newton took control of possession in the first 10 minutes of the game, but as the game progressed, Kapaun was able to hold the ball more. At the end of the first half, possession was about 60-40 in Kapaun’s favor.
The Crusaders outshot Newton 3-1 in the first half with one shot going off the post and one shot going off the crossbar.
An apparent handball by the Crusaders in their own penalty area was not called. Newton’s Kaden Weber-Gonzlez was sent off in the 72nd minute for a foul against the goalkeeper.
“We’ll have to make our adjustments,” Jantzi said. “We had some others play well back there today.”
Newton takes on a Maize squad that fell to Bishop Carroll 1-0 earlier in the day. The Eagles are 1-2 with a pair of losses to Bishop Carroll.
“We match up against them very well against them,” Jantzi said. “They are going to be a solid team.”
