WICHITA — A Chase Simpson home run to lead off the bottom of the ninth lifted the Wichita Wingnuts to a 4-3 win over the Winnipeg Goldeyes Tuesday night in American Association play at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
The win was Wichita’s second straight over the defending AA champions.
Josh Mazzola put Winnipeg on the board with an RBI single in the top of the third. Tony Thomas answered for Wichita with an RBI double in the fourth.
In the bottom of the sixth, Wichita took the lead when Thomas hit an RBI triple and came home on a passed ball. Winnipeg tied the game in the eighth on an RBI double for Mazzola and an RBI single for Josh McAdams.
Wichita’s Felix Carvallo (2-1) pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for the win. Starter Jordan Cooper went seven innings, allowing a run on seven hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Brady Bowen pitched the eighth inning, allowing two runs, four hits and a strikeout.
Angel Reyes finished two for three hitting for Wichita. Thomas went two for four.
Winnipeg’s Edwin Carl (3-4) took the loss. Starter P.J. Browne went five innings, allowing a run on five hits with a walk and five strikeouts. Brandon Bingel went two innings, allowing a pair of unearned runs on a hit with a strikeout. Victor Capellan pitched the eighth, allowing a hit.
Mazzola finished three for four hitting. Josh Romanski and Blake Adams each went two for four.
Wichita is 53-35, while Winnipeg is 36-52. With 12 games remaining for Wichita, the Wingnuts are 11 1/2 games behind Sioux City in the AA South. Wichita is 2 1/2 games behind the Kansas City T-Bones for second place in the South. Wichita hosts Winnipeg for the final time this season at 7:05 p.m. today.
