MULVANE — The Newton Rebels gave up five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning leading to a 9-6 loss to the Mulvane Patriots Thursday in Sunflower Collegiate League play in Mulvane.

Hunter Aguirre hit a solo home run for Mulvane in the bottom of the second inning.

Landon Erway hit a three-run home run for Newton in the top of the third. Brody Mariotti added an RBI single. In the bottom of the third, Keone Givens stole home. Mulvane also scored on a wild pitch. Channing Williams tied the game on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth.

Mariotti hit a solo shot for Newton in the top of the sixth, but Mulvane came back with a Givens RBI single, a two-run double for Javis Larson, a David Beard RBI single and a passed ball.

Dylan Brooks hit a solo home run for Newton in the eighth.

Givens went four for five hitting for Mulvane. Larson went two for four.

Dakota Rodd threw 3 2-3 innings of relief for the win, allowing a run on two hits with two strikeouts. Mark Hartley pitched the top of the ninth for the save, allowing a hit, a walk and a strikeout.

Mariotti finished two for three hitting for Newton. Cale Thompson and Luke Royle each finished two for four. Brooks went two for five.

Newton starter Ruben Portillo went five innings, allowing three earned runs, seven hits, two walks and four strikeouts. Zach Bravo took the loss for Newton, allowing five runs, five hits, two walks and two strikeouts in two innings. Isiah Perez finished the game, walking one.

Mulvane is 19-5 while Newton drops to 7-19. Newton hosts Cheney at 7 p.m. today in the regular-season home finale at Klein-Scott Field.
