SALINA — The Newton Senior Knights gave up six runs in the top of the 10th inning in a 9-5 loss to the Wichita Kings Wednesday in the Salina Grand Slam Tournament at Dean Evans Stadium.

Wichita took a 2-1 lead in the third inning, but Newton outscored Wichita 2-1 in the sixth. Newton added two runs in the bottom of the 10th.

Wichita’s Jordan Ellison threw 3 2-3 innings of relief for the win. Starter Houston McFarlane allowed a run on three hits with six strikeouts in 3 1-3 innings. Cody Troyer pitched the 10th inning,

Sport Tegethoff took the loss in relief of Bryan Cusick. Tegethoff went 3 2-3 innings, allowing no earned runs on two hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Cusick allowed three runs on six hits with four walks and three strikeouts.

Zach Gillig led Wichita, going two for four with a home run and four RBIs. Bailey Burns drove in two runs. McFarlane and Cole Hickerson each drove in a run. Alec Kealey went two for four.

Tegethoff, Hunter Mapes, Cusick and Jace Maxwell each drove in a run for Newton. Alex Kern went two for three.

Newton has a pool game at noon today and then enters bracket play.

WICHITA — The Wichita Wingnuts snapped a four-game losing streak that saw the team drop from second place to third in the American Association South Division to third with an 8-1 win over the Lincoln Saltdogs Wednesday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.

Wichita jumped out 3-0 after four innings. Lincoln scored a run in the sixth, but the Wingnuts put things away with two runs in the bottom of the sixth and three more runs in the eighth.

John Nester led Wichita at the plate, going two for three with a home run and two RBIs. Ryne Willard went two for three with a home run and an RBI. Leo Vargas went two for four with two RBIs. Troy Thomas went two for four with an RBI.

Charlie Gillies (4-1) threw eight innings for Wichita, allowing an unearned run on five hits with 11 strikeouts. Austin Boyle pitched the ninth, walking one and striking out one.

Tyler Herron (4-5) took the loss for Lincoln, allowing five runs in six innings on eight hits with five strikeouts. Dimitri Kourtis finished the game, allowing two earned runs on two hits with three walks and a pair of strikeouts.

T.J. Bennett drove in a run for Lincoln, 25-19.

Wichita is 25-17. The two teams wrap up their series at 7:05 p.m. today. Wichita remains eight games behind Sioux City in the AA South and a game behind the Kansas City T-Bones for second place. Lincoln drops to 9 1/2 games behind Sioux City.

PEREZ SIGNS WITH MEXICAN LEAGUE — Wichita Wingnut infielder Fernando Perez was signed by the Tijuana Toros of the Mexican League, while first baseman Graylin Derke was picked up by the Vallejo Admirals of the Pacific Association for a player to be named later.

Perez is a seven-year pro who spent six seasons in the San Diego Padre organization, reaching as high as Class AA. In 28 games with Wichita this season, he has been batting .262 with eight home runs and 23 RBIs. He spent three seasons in the Meixcan Pacific Winter League.

Derke played one season in the Pecos League and spent last season with Vallejo of the Pacific Association. In 97 pro games, he has hit .315 with 13 home runs and 68 RBIs. He helped lead Vallejo to the PA Championship game. He played college baseball at Westmont College.
