The Newton Rebels needed 12 innings to break a three-game losing streak and stop the Hutchinson Monarchs 4-3 Wednesday night in Sunflower Collegiate League play at Klein-Scott Field.
Newton scored a run in the bottom of the second, but gave up two runs in the top of the sixth. The Rebels forced extra innings with a run in the bottom of the eighth. Each team scored a run in the 10th.
T.K. Koontz went three for five hitting for the Rebels. Brody Mariotti and Isiah Perez each went two for four hitting. Cale Thompson went two for six. Enzo Bonventre drove in a run for Newton.
Freddie Loeffler pitched the win, allowing one hit. Starter Jason Braziel struck out nine, allowing two runs on six hits with a walk. Ruben Portillo allowed a run on six hits with a walk.
Hutchinson’s Collin Kessler took the loss, allowing three runs on nine huts with four walks and three strikeouts. Jackson Rutledge allowed a run on four hits with a walk and six strikeouts.
Taylor Barber drove in two runs for Hutchinson. Riley Metzger went four for five hitting. Dylan Nedved went three for six. Ryan Stoecklein went two for five. Eric Bonhert went two for six.
Newton improves to 5-15, while Hutchinson drops to 11-7.
Newton hosts Mulvane at 7 p.m. today.
