The Newton Rebels had chances in both games against the Wichita Sluggers in a doubleheader Tuesday night in Sunflower Collegiate League play at Klein-Scott Field, but the Rebels weren’t able to get over the top.

The Sluggers won 9-4 and 5-4.

In the first game against the Sluggers, Will Clark hit a grand slam with two outs in the top of the first. With two outs in the second inning, Josh Cox hit an RBI double and scored on a Zach Baxley single.

Newton struck in the third inning, scoring on a wild pitch, a Luke Royle RBI double and a two-run shot by Brody Mariotti.

Jack Maki hit a two-run home run in the top of the seventh. Baxley drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

Maki finished three for four hitting. Josh Cox went two for three. Clark finished two for four.

Brandon Ash recorded two outs in the four inning for the win. Starter Tanner Olmstead went three innings with two earned runs on six hits with three strikeouts. Dustin Rush recorded an out in the fourth. J.T. Bell went three innings for the save, allowing five hits with three strikeouts.

Newton starter R.J. Gaines went six innings, allowing six runs on seven hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Quade Truby allowed three runs on three hits. Ruben Portillo allowed a hit with two strikeouts to finish the game.

Cale Thompson went three for four hitting for Newton. Jack Leydon went two for two hitting. Landon Erway went two for three. T.K. Koontz went two for four.

In the second game, Wichita took the lead in the top of the first with an RBI double for Hunter Lamunyon and an RBI single for Trace Maddux.

Brayden Whitchurch hit an RBI single in the fourth inning.

In the bottom of the fifth, Newton’s Isiah Perez and Mariotti each drew a bases-loaded walk. Emilio Escamilla and Royle each were hit by pitches to put Newton in the lead.

Lamunyon hit a solo home run for Wichita in the sixth inning. Cade Morrow added an RBI double in the inning.

Jake Schrieber threw three innings of relief for the win, allowing one hit and seven strikeouts. Starter Joe Baker threw four scoreless innings, allowing four hits with a walk and a strikeout. A.J. Shaw threw one inning, allowing three earned runs on three hits with three walks and two strikeouts.

Newton pitcher Brad McBride took the loss, allowing a run on a hit with a walk and a strikeout in one inning. Starter Tony Caporrimo went 5 1-3 innings, allowing six hits, four runs, five walks and two strikeouts. Portillo finished the game, allowing a hit with a strikeout.

Lamunyon went three for four hitting for Wichita. Whitchurch went two for three.

Thompson and Koontz each went two for four hitting for Newton.

Wichita is 9-10. Newton is 4-15 and hosts Hutchinson at 6 p.m. today.
